Blessing Families for Over 60 Years!
In 1948 the Protestant Youth Organization was formed to meet the needs of troubled families in Detroit. Counseling and foster care were some of the first services provided. Now known as Christian Family Services (CFS), we continue to help individuals and families through our counseling, adoption and foster care programs. CFS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, inter-denominational Christian organization located in Southfield, Michigan, dedicated to helping individuals and families in need.
CFS was established by a group of Christian business leaders to help combat the rising problem of juvenile delinquency in the Detroit area. These men contacted Rev. Richard Rohland, pastor of the Evangelical Free Church in Ludington, Michigan, to direct the work. Rev. Rohland accepted the call and moved his family to the Detroit area with the promise of two weeks salary and much encouragement and prayer support. CFS was started because of the visionary faith of these men coupled with the financial support of a few churches.
Our purpose was to help area youth and their families through spiritual guidance and professional counseling. News of our organization quickly spread and additional churches became involved in our support. During our formative years, we worked with the Detroit Police Department as they referred many young people to our program. As our agency grew, so did the obvious need for Christian foster care and adoptive services. These aspects of our program were established and licensed by the State of Michigan in 1955 and 1958 respectively.
Since its inception, the CFS philosophy has always been to find a viable working solution to a person’s problems through the use of psychological and Biblical perspectives. Currently the organization is divided into three diverse programs: 1.) Professional Counseling; 2.) Unplanned pregnancy aid; and 3.) Adoption and Foster Care services. Our goal is to reach out and help as many needy people as our facilities, finances and expertise will allow.
We are seen by many churches as a local mission and about 6% of our income comes from the support of such evangelical churches as these. It is important to note that many of our clients in both the counseling program as well as the crisis pregnancy program are referred to us directly or indirectly by the local church.
Through our professional counseling program, we offer a wide range of counseling services to include; family counseling, individual therapy, marriage counseling, pre-marital counseling, suicide prevention and intervention, counseling for children and adolescents, grief counseling, vocational counseling, and group counseling. We also offer psychological testing for youth and adults.
Our present counseling staff is comprised of men and women who have at least a Master’s level degree in a counseling related field and who have a License in Counseling, Psychology or who are Certified Social Workers in the State of Michigan. They are all dedicated Christian professionals who are supervised by our Director of Clinical Services, a fully licensed Psychologist who holds a doctorate degree in Psychology.
Over the years, our counseling ministry has helped over 23,000 individuals, many of whom continue to support us through either gifts or referrals. Fees are kept as low as possible and are based on a sliding scale.
Through our crisis pregnancy aid program, we offer unlimited support to women and their families who find themselves in an unplanned pregnancy. This support extends to the father and his family as well. As a Christian organization, we feel responsible for providing some positive alternatives to the abortion dilemma. We provide free counseling, pre-natal care, adoption planning and foster care if requested and financial arrangements are made to negate the cost of delivery. We also provide financial assistance toward any legal fees incurred should a mother choose to release her child for adoption. Support through individual and group counseling is an integral part of our crisis pregnancy program.
Through our foster care program, we are authorized by the State of Michigan to license and supervise Christian foster homes. The love and tenderness that these foster parents continue to give these little ones during their time of crises represents an immeasurable part of our program. Since 1955 we have been able to provide well over 150,000 hours of foster care for these needy children.
For those families wishing to adopt internationally, interstate, or to work with attorneys, we can provide the state required pre-placement assessment (homestudy).
Another rewarding aspect to our adoption and foster care program is the knowledge that we have had the opportunity to place more than 1,000 infants and children into loving, adoptive families, many who have waited years for a child. Historically, the agency’s position has been to only place children, whether for foster care or adoption, into Christian homes which are actively involved in Bible believing churches and who are able to give testimony of living an active Christian life. We believe that over the years this has been an extremely unique form of evangelism whereby neglected and dependent children are placed into homes where they can experience the love of Jesus Christ.
We pray that the Lord will continue to be glorified through our work for Him, that both children and adults will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through our ministry, and that the church as a body might be edified through our total family ministries.
